No time for movies :(

I come to you with sad news.

I have just had NO time to see movies lately. I have yet to see Prince of Persia and no Toy Story 3, The Karate Kid or A-Team for me.

I may have actually dodged a bullet on a couple of those but I haven’t even seen the movies I rented for Blockbuster Online yet. I have heard good things about Toy Story 3 and The Karate Kid, nothing about the A-Team and mixed reviews about The Prince of Persia. Good thing for those producers… I want to see them all anyway.

I am actually more behind than I would like to admit. *perhaps this should have been a blog about being busy… hmmm*

So here is my short list of movies I missed but can’t wait to see:

  • Date Night
  • Death At A Funeral
  • Shrek Forever (even though I still haven’t seen Shrek The Third)
  • The Losers
  • Just Wright
  • Killers
  • Get Him To The Greek
  • Johah Hex

*Are you sensing that I like comedies?…. yeah, I LOVE them!!*

The good news is that I am hopefully entering the home stretch regarding a lot of personal, academic and career items.

I am also almost done with an online portfolio, just took on a new client and am preparing a big website launch so I can have a place to peddle my own movies and other creative type stuff…

…so I will just have to catch you, and these movies on the flip-side!

Peace and Love!

iPod goes Web 2.0??

Well, for my education purposes, it sure has!

Here is my attempt at making a Web 2.0 style iPod logo:

iPod Web 2.0 Educational Logo

I chose shades and hues of green because green is a popular Web 2.0 color although I think this design would serve we for the multiple colors you can find iPods in. I wanted to go with something that wouldn’t need a lot of horizontal real estate and would be quick and memorable to look at.

I think I have accomplished that with this design and I would like to say I think my classmates have done splendidly as well.

*Boy am I glad I didn’t look at anyone else’s before I did mine…*

Kick-Ass… kicked *butt*!

Why don't more people try to be Superheroes?

Wow, what a surprise! This movie was great! One that I will be adding to the collection for sure.

Likes: The realism in this movie was an unexpected treat. People fought back where you feel you would have in real life and the villains used guns and knives the way you hope that guy you think might be following won’t. There was a good dose of humor, lots of action, sprinkled with a little social commentary and a hint of good triumphs over evil.

Dislikes: Nothing yet. I have to see it at least 2 more time before I can say for sure.

Summary: There are some other things I would love to say about this movie but they might be considered spoilers and I HATE UNSOLICITED SPOILERS! So I will just say, try to watch movies with no expectations, that way you can make up your own mind and appreciate it for what it turns out to be instead of the “It will change your life” expectations that usually just ruin the movie.

Ridiculous Movies… that know what they are!

I seem to have an affinity for ridiculous movies… but just the ones that know what they are.

You know the ones I’m talking about… with their campy dialog or obviously bad special effects. Sometimes its more important to communicate something (even if its silly) than to have a blockbuster that will be critically acclaimed… at least in my book.

These are the movies that you don’t know why you love them even though the boom mic dips into the frame 10 times in just as many minutes. These films have heroes that defy the laws of nature (sometimes with wiring or harnessing visible), they have strange plot devices that we learn to love, they have unimaginable amounts of blood and gore (so much so that you start to laugh more than be disgusted), they have the zaniest one-liners that we go on to repeat for years. You love these ridiculous movies and you know it…

Here is a short list of 5 must-see ridiculous movies (in no particular order):

  • Shoot’em Up
  • Blood and Bone
  • Kill Bill
  • The Unnameable
  • Ninja Assassin

Patriotic Movies

Happy Memorial Day, all and THANK YOU to all the men and women who faithfully serve and protect us!!

I thought I would chime in on this day of thanks with a couple of my favorite Patriotic themed movies.

First up, Glory (1989). This is the story of the contribution of all-black soldiers during the Civil War. It highlights challenges and successes for the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the son of an influential abolitionist. Overall, just a good movie. I like how it showed barriers being broken down within the military, where soldiers started to see each other as soldiers regardless of race.

The other movie I want to talk about is The Patriot (2000). This movie takes us back to the American Revolution and shows us the war from the perspective a father and son end up fighting side by side. The father is an ex-soldier who has settled down into family life and the son is an eager youth who feels his father is hiding behind his family.

Both of these are good movies that I recommend. I hope you get to spend some time relaxing this holiday and don’t forget to honor and remember those who served and are serving!

Memorial Weekend

I am so happy the holiday weekend is here. I have been having an exhausting couple weeks!  I am so tired I think I just hallucinated. I think it was a black dog… which made me think about the movie Black Dog… which made me think about the movies I have from Blockbuster Online (“Blood and Bone” and “Yours, Mine and Ours”)… which made me think about what is there to see this weekend?

I am leaning toward going to see Prince of Persia… but I really don’t want to spend 10 bucks on a movie I am not sure Jake can pull off.

We’ll see because I will have friends in town and at least 4 birthdays to celebrate over this weekend… and movies are somewhat of a tradition for birthdays.

Which now makes me wonder what was going on 9 months ago for so many people…. hmmm… I guess that is a different blog.

How do you get your movie fix?

Sometimes we just don’t get to catch that new flick in the theater and we are left to rent. When that happens, do you use Blockbuster or Netflix?

Isn’t it funny how we are so partial to that which we experienced first? I hear that Netflix is great when it comes to getting movies and what not, but somehow, I can’t imagine ever using them.

Why… because I had Blockbuster first. I mean, I can still go into the store and get movies right away for a quicker fix and I get two coupons a month I can use to rent even games if I want. Why change?

The truth is, I wouldn’t know what Netlix has to offer because I have been completely satisfied with Blockbuster. I suppose as a customer, I am Blockbuster’s to lose. Which they almost did when the store closest to me closed. I was on a first name basis with the employees and they would always make rental and purchasing suggestions that I would often take. But alas, I must drive all the way to Ferndale now (which I have yet to do).

Keep your customers happy, businesses. There is almost always someone waiting to scoop them up.

How can I use this to promote myself (and my movies)?

This week I learned about RSS feed readers. I always knew they were out there but never saw a need for me personally, but I saw something interesting this time.

I read someone’s forum post that lead me to a feed reader that opened my eyes a little by listing feeds as free which made me think, “People charge for feeds?!?”

Now I am left exploring the web to see if I can leverage this “feed” thing to promote myself. So far it all just seems like too much work and although I am an avid WoW Head, I think I like real life too much to be on the computer sifting threw so much information… hmmm… time will tell.

Perhaps when my movie site is up and running I will need others to spread the word for me… hmmm… can you say Google Bookmarks, Delicious, Digg… shall I go on!

A Place To Get Lost

It occurred to me that we as people do a lot of interesting things in pursuit of happiness. Sadly, I am afraid that a lot of us have given up on ever finding that happiness and instead have settled for a place to get lost.

We get lost in drugs and alcohol, destructive behavior and relationships and even in the more simple things like music and movies.

Given that the first 4 things I mentioned are widely accepted as bad or negative, you might be wondering why I would put music and movies, two thing I love so much, in the same company with such things. Maybe we should look at how they can affect our mood, opinions, emotions and more. However, this is more of a movie blog so I won’t dive into music and its trends, but focus on movies instead.

Movies can transport you to new places and familiar situations, they can open our eyes to new truths or uncover unknown fears. We get lost in movies and put our minds, bodies and souls in the hands of a group of people we’ll probably never meet. Thus, I feel there is a great responsibility in that on the part of our movie makers and lately, I feel like movies are leaving people with some useless experiences to learn and grow from.

Far to many movies have become trite and unimaginative. The film industry has become afraid, due to economic situations or any number of other reasons, to make movies that can change people’s lives. We see a proliferation of remakes, franchise reboots and familiar outcomes. Movies made with big names and small plots, translated to 3D just because or to jump on the band wagon (really, why was Clash-of-the-Titans made 3D at the last minute??).

Its not all bad though. There a few nuggets of goodness to be found. Some of my personal favorites of late are How to Train Your Dragon 3D, Ironman 2 and Avatar 3D (for the visual experience not so much the storyline). And of course I personally still want to be a part of that elite group of people with the power to affect the hearts and minds of millions.

I can see it now… TRI-Level Enterprises presents A Bacon’s Palace Production… *sigh* I’m still in pursuit of my happiness. Here’s hoping I don’t get too lost along the way.

Movie Talk Day 1

Why movies you may be asking?

Well, I want to make them, write them, be in them! Most people who know me know that as it has been something I have wanted to do for years.

I have friends and family who talk about my scripts as though they are already in the coming soon queue.

I have just always had an affection for movies. It stems from my love of storytelling. I have always wanted to show people what I see in my head and making a movie seems like the most logical way to do that.

So… now I want to talk about you a little. What is your favorite type of movie and why? I’ll go first!

I am a little embarrassed but I would have to say musical. I think the reason is because it makes the story more memorable for me.

Now you…
